The funny thing about childbirth is that *typically* (there are exceptions) the more it hurts, the
better it is. The pain of the contraction is from the body working to get the baby out. A lot of
times, if you stop the pain, you stop the contraction, which slows the birth process. A mother
giving birth wants her contractions to be really hard and she wants them to come very quickly
together. That way, *usually* (there are exceptions), the baby comes quicker.
That said, she may want to drink red raspberry tea (the real stuff - check labels) to help
strengthen the uterus. I personally used this with my second pregnancy. I drank it everyday
from 4 months pregnant up until the day I gave birth. I had very painful, but extremely
productive, contractions. My son was out with 5 pushes.
From my herb books:
Partridge Berry - Drink in a decoction for two or three weeks previous to and during
delivery.
Red Raspberry - General pregnancy tonic.
Black Haw - Relieves menstrual cramps, stops miscarriage, and soothes the uterus. (I
personally would not take this for fear of slowing delivery because it stops cramping.)
Blue Cohosh - This herb powerfully stimulates uterine contractions. Use 20 to 30 drops of
tincture to induce labor (and abortion, so don't use until ready to birth) and speed birthing
process.
Parsley - Stimulates uterine contractions.
St. John's Wort - Using the oil, rub it on the perineum during labor. Also good to use in
same area after birthing, to heal.
