Migraine & Headache Remedies

Contributed by Astarte

These are from the book Jude's Herbal Home Remedies by Jude C. Williams, M.H. It's one of my very favorite books.

Put 10-15 elderberries in 1 cup of water. Mash berries and bring to a quick boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain, sweeten and drink. This should be taken as soon as you feel a headache start on, as the analgesic effect is mild.

Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and bring to a boil. Inhale the fumes for several minutes. Repeat as needed.

This is a natural painkiller and is good for migraine headaches. Chop 1 tablespoon of Stinking Iris (Iris foetidissima) and add to 1 pint of water. Boil gently for 15 minutes. Strain and take up to 3 tablespoons per day. Has a slight laxative effect so you may want to weaken it further.

At the first sign of a headache, make a strong cup of coffee, adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. The caffiene in the coffee seems to help some migraine sufferers.

Put 2 tablespoons of dried nettle in 2 cups of milk. Simmer for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey. Drink while warm. Do not use if you show an allergic reaction to nettle. Substitute peppermint if need be. Test for allergic reaction by taking small sips the first time this recipe is tried. If no reaction or rash shows up, it would be safe to use.

An old folk cure for treating migraines and headaches is to take about a tablespoon of powdered or finely chopped ginger add it to 8oz. of cool water. Drink it. If you find this dosage is not working, up it another teaspoon at a time.

This will treat some headaches and help relieve migraines because:

1) Many headaches are caused by dehydration - most people do not drink enough water or other non-caffeinated, non-carbonated fluid throughout the day. Drinking water will help relieve most ordinary headaches.

2) In the case of migraine, ginger root is good for stomach upset and nausea, and many times vomiting and nausea precede a migraine. If you vomit from pain rather from the migraine aura or prodome, then this won't help. If the nausea is a thing apart from your headache, ginger will provide some help, especially if you catch the migraine in time before the symptoms get really intense. Ginger root is also good for mild travel sickness (not useful if you get as sick as I do (when I fly I get dramatic enough that I've had three stewardesses call the paramedics for me - talk about embarrassing!).

Consider getting yourself on a Feverfew supplement. Taken over time it's known to prevent and cure Migraines.

What is Imitrix?

It is a prescription drug designed specifically for Migraines. It originally came out only as an injection - (that was difficult for me - had to have my husband do it - The idea of putting a needle into my skin made it crawl) now its also avail in a nasal spray and tablet.

Migraines are terrible, I would see very strong blinding light patterns and become violently ill. The pain is intolerable. They usually strike on one side of the head and are like a blinding stabbing intense pain. I would be unable to move except to be sick from the pain. Ice does help a bit, pain killers don't work and can make your nausea worse and cause more vomiting which causes more pain.

Imitrix somehow restricts the floor of blood to the brain causing the pain to diminish.

I suggest that you also begin to walk everyday. It saved me from migraine attracts that I would have up to 3 times a week. Now I hardly get them perhaps once every 3 or 4 mos.

I have done some research on this for a friend of mine who suffers from migraines.

The first item is a prevention method. Thyme is excellent for prevention if you tend to wake up with migraines or the beginnings of one. Put it under your pillow at night so the scent can calm you and work throughout the night.

For my friend and another lady I worked with, I made medicine bags. The first thing I made was the cord to tie the bag. I finger wove a five inch length of embroidery thread in blue (calming and healing). While I did this, I thought calming and healing thoughts and concentrated my energies into the cord. Once that was done (it took about two hours), I found some fabric that was left over from her wedding and sewed together a small bag. I inserted the cord and some fresh thyme. I gave it to her with instructions to crush it in her hand each night before she went to sleep to bruise the leaves and release the scent. Then she was to put it under her pillow. She tells me that it works great but she has forgotten to get some fresh thyme to replenish the bag.

DO NOT eat the thyme, as large quantities are hazardous to your health. Only small quantities used in cooking are okay.

Also, feverfew is being studied scientifically all over the world with some amazing results. It seems to work very well. You can grow it, but considering the time and effort, it is cheaper to buy it at the store. It generally costs about $5.00 for 60 capsules. Here in Idaho, you can get it at all the herbal stores, Target, ShopKo, K-Mart and so on. Most of the major retailers carry herbals in some form or other.

Another, non-herbal, but extremely effective method is acupuncture. I interviewed an acupuncturist who had incredible success treating a chronic sufferer. Depending on the treatment and acupuncturist, you may not have to have needles used at all (for those of you with such phobias). The acupunturist that I use, put little bits of a herbal mixture called moxibustion on two points along the hairline. He then ignites them and they smolder away, warming the pressure point and relieving the headache. No there is no open flame by your hair. It is perfectly safe. If you are looking for an acupuncturist, make sure that you find one with the appropriate qualifications. Most states and countries don't require certification, look for one who has certification from the North American Society of Acupuncture and Alternative Medicine or American Board of Eastern Medicine. Both offer certification, I believe, and require a certain number of clinical hours completed before the acupuncturist is allowed certification.

Whatever way you go, please know that you do not have to suffer if you are pro-active about your health. Rather than waiting for the headache to strike, try to find out why they do. If you can locate what causes the headache most of the time-stress, poor health, poor eating habits, certain types of food and so on-then you can fight back before it gets out of hand.

Lavender tea works wonders for my headaches. This could be an individual resolution...but when I get the "behind the eye" headaches they can be stopped dead in there tracks by using a nasal spray called "Ocean Spray." Ocean spray is water and salt..thats all! The bottle will say sodium chloride, but that is salt. It won't harm you and believe me it works! Give it a try. It stings the very first time, but after that no discomfort. Hope this helps.

Just another note about "Ocean Spray", our MD redommends it to my children for use in the winter. We live in the mountains, very high and dry here, especially in winter. They were getting nose bleeds and I was running the humidifier. Started using the spray, and the bleeding stopped. Also, just that little bit of moisturizer in the nasal passages helps to prevent colds and flu in winter.
