Mouth Pain and Irritation

Well, this is not an herb, but it may help your mouth pain. It has been 15 years since I had braces and I wasn't quite into herbs then as I am now - my mom wasn't either, so she didn't give me any herbs that I remember to ease my pain. I have had other oral pain and wounds, however, and I've found that gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide not only helps to heal, but eases pain. Please keep in mind that Peroxide is NOT EDIBLE. DO NOT SWALLOW IT. Gargle with it and spit it out like you would any mouthwash. It also tastes pretty nasty, but you can be pretty sure that it will ease the swelling of your gums.

I did a little more research and I have some more information. Here it is. Things you might try:

1) Purple Sage - This is typically a good thing to soothe sore throats, but it also helps dry up extra mucous and infections. I'd make a tea from it with a little lemon balm or peppermint in it to help it taste better. Peppermint, Lemon Balm and Sage are all supposed to help indigestion and stomach ailments as well, so a tea made from those things might help both your symptoms. Sage should be avoided if you are pregnant or have epilepsy, though.

2) Thyme - This is a very strong antiseptic. A tea made from the leaves is good for infections and it is also supposed to help stomach problems. If you can find Lemon Thyme, you might want to make your tea from that because it will taste better than common Thyme.

3) Rosemary - An infusion made from Rosemary is good for a gargle/mouthwash. This may help to cleanse some of what is causing your gums to swell.

The properties of the above herbs have been taken from "Pocket Garden Herbs" by Lesley Bremness, DK Publishing ©1997

Marshmallow is also used to ease swollen gums in teething babies. You can cut a piece of the root and let it dry, peel the bark and side shoots off and chew on it. I realize you're not teething, nor are you a baby, but the symptoms are the same. :)

An ointment made from chamomile flowers is also used for swollen gums in teething babies. This should be used sparingly.
