More and more often, people are turning to traditions of the Native North American Indians. As part Cherokee and a member of the New Moon team, I have assembled some popular and some essential items from my understanding of the traditions and practices of the many divergent tribes of the Native North American peoples.
All our products are genuine, from Natives or companies who give back to the Native community. We have continued our tradition of selecting only the highest quality products here by bringing you some of the best Native products on offer. The earth is our mother, we must take care of Her, honour Her, and keep Her ceremonies sacred. Now that the sacred times of many different tribes have come as was foretold, the ceremonies and traditions are coming back with the next generation. It is the hope of all at New Moon that the traditions sacred to the Native American people, all of them in their myriad forms, are never lost.

The Native Americans use incense in prayer and in all aspects of daily life. In the North West, sweetgrass and knichknick are used, whilst the Pueblo Indians use pine needles and cedar. The Hopi use Juniper tops and the Plains Indians use cedar tops and sage to purify and to make offerings. These days, a mishmash of traditional practices are used by many seeking a spiritual path beyond that which they have experienced directly. We hope that the products offered here will help you get a clearer idea of what you wish to use and *how* to use it.

(From "Smudging" By Elaine Lunham) "Smudging helps us center ourselves with the four sacred herbs mentioned: tobacco (ah-say-ma), sweetgrass, sage, and cedar. We begin by using a shell or bowl with a fan or feather. We then smudge the room, slowly walking clockwise around the perimeter of the room, fanning the smudge pot, keeping it lit and wafting the smoke about. Smudge any medicine tool you will be using such as pipe, jewelry, outfit, etc.

"It is a good practice to smudge each person in a group, circle, ceremony, and lodge. Starting from the East and holding the smudge pot lit, each person can bathe themselves in the smoke. Many people smudge the heart area first, next the head area, and then the arms, then downward toward the legs. This isn't the only way you can smudge. It isn't wrong to smudge another way. We can purify and cleanse fairly regularly in this day and age with so much sickness and bad feelings around."

The term "Smudging" has come into common usage within Contemporary Shamanism; and approaches influenced by this; largely through its Native American derivations. To Smudge is to purify and cleanse yourself, and to make contact with the spirits- however you conceive them to be. From this we can see that Smudging is a powerful but simple way to use ceremony of connection and grounding in ones life. Smudging is also prayer- many native peoples consider that the smoke of the smouldering smudge mix is taken by the spirits in good ways, and if you make such offerings then the spirits will know you and want to help you in your life. There is a principle that one should only ask for 'Help & healing' through ceremony of this kind, and so if you need help with problems, need guidance or direction, or ask for healing for yourself or others, then it is fine to ask the spirits for their help in these ways.
Smudge sticks are most easily lit from a candle flame (Matches generally go out before the stick is lit). Once there's a flame blow it out so that the smudge stick is smoldering, not burning. The idea is to get curls of smoke, not to set the smudge stick on fire. (Special note: Don't smudge while infants, pregnant women, or people with respiratory diseases are in the room as the active chemical can be harmful.) If you're smudging objects, such as crystals, you can hold them in the smoke. If you're smudging a group of crystals, a room or a group of people, walk about the perimeter, giving special attention to the corners and the places behind doors and fan the smoke throughout with a smudging fan.
If you're smudging yourself, fan the smoke so that it touches all parts of you. You may want to especially focus on areas where you feel there are blockages or where there has been or is physical, emotional, or psychic pain. Either single or multiple feather fans are excellent for fanning smoke over yourself or others.

H81 - Lakota white sage wand, 14". This sage (salvia apiana) is highly revered by American Indians. For spiritual or medicinal purposes white sage is a powerful herb. American Indians have said that the smoke is useful not only for the purification of the body, but for material objects as well. For this reason sage is considered a sacred plant to many tribes.

For sweat lodges, some tribes boil up wild sage into a tea to splash on the heated stones when more steam is required, as well as to splash on their own bodies. Other tribes have placed pieces of sage in between the firewood in the belief that the plant will help to purify even the fire itself.

In the Lakota yuwipi ceremony, a stem of sage is placed behind the right ear so that the spirits will know you. Each wand is 14" long and very large. You can easily remove a sprig of sage for behind you ear or on the sacred fire. They weigh approx 80 grams and are £7.50/$12 each. These will last a long, long time and are great value for money.

We also have MINI white sage wands! They are only £1.50/$2.50 each and perfect in a multi-pack (see sage below)

For smudging, you will need something to burn the herbs in -- a bowl or an abalone shell, a candle in a holder to light the smudge from and a feather or fan of feathers. one of the kits listed below contains smudge, incense and a candle while the other contains 6 tiny sage bundles and a feather. We have incorporated both kits into the below. You can use the following smudging ceremony, or you may choose to create your own. There is no one path, and there is no one right way. Honour your ancestors, the earth, the sky, the sun and moon and learn reverence for all the creatures of the earth. In this way you live a magical life.

Place the pot/abalone shell in front of you and thank the Lady Ocean for the life that created it and for allowing its use in this ceremony. Place the smudge bundle from the kit in the shell being sure to show due reverence for the sacred herbs. Thank the Earth and the spirits of the field they came from for their sacrifice. They have given their life and essence so that you could honour the ancestors or cleanse or whatever you are using this smudge for.
Next, light the smudge from the candle provided gradually. Try to turn it to light it evenly. Do not allow it to stay alight too long or you will use it all too quickly. Hold it and think on your purpose and imbue the smudge and flame with your intention. The tiny smudge is perfect for this. It is in this way that the smoke will contain the energies you have chosen to work with. Fan the smudge fire gently with the feather provided in the kit until the herbs are burning enough to create sufficient smoke. Then put out the fire with one or two quick passes with the feather. If the smudge looks like it is going out, fan it vigorously until it is smoking again. If it does go out, it is fine to relight it.

Now, using both your hands as a cup, catch some smoke and cleanse whichever place needs healing or cleansing on your body by washing the smoke over it. Repeat this process for each chakra or injured area or until you begin to feel cleansed/better. While doing this, it is good to see the smoke carry away any cares or physical injuries. If you are smudging with other people, smudge yourself first and then hold the shell by its edges for the others to smudge themselves from. Remember to chant positive chants such as "The earth is our mother" or "air I am" or particularly fitting native chants.
You can also smudge any objects that you might want to by passing them through the smoke and asking that the objects be cleansed for your use. You can also smudge a house or room that needs cleansing by going around the room with the burning smudge and using your feather to push any negative energies out through an open door or window. When you are done, let the ashes cool in the shell and plant them in the earth thanking the herbs and the earth for the sacrifice and planting new seeds in the spring.
Many people smudge before any other ceremony, to start the day, or before and after a serious discussion. It is also good to cleanse your house occasionally to clear out any stagnant energy. Remember always that there are many paths to the same place. Walk yours with care and reverence. Do not simply follow because you have been told to but look to your heart for what feels right..

SweetGrass Braids

H109 - Sweetgrass Braids (18" - 22" long) These braids are wonderfully long and rich with scent. They infuse any space with their unique smell even when not being burned. There is a lot of sweetgrass in each braid and so these will last you quite a long time. £ 4.50/$7.00 each
Very important to the Sioux and Cherokee nations, its botanical name is Hierochloe Oderata. In these tribes, the sweetgrass is braided like hair braids. It could be burnt by lighting the end of it, or (more economically) by shaving little bits of it onto charcoal in a brazier. Sweetgrass is burnt after smudging with sage, to welcome in good influences after the bad had been driven out. It can also be carried in medicine bags and given to friends as an offering. Sweetgrass is very rare today, and traditional Plains people have been attempting to protect the last of it. Cedar, which is not endangered, can safely be used this way. Also Pinon pine needles (used more frequently by the Southwest Teneh, like the Navajo and Apache as well as the Pueblo people and the Zuni) and Copal (used by the Yaqui and in ancient times by the Azteca and the Maya) have similar effect.

candle.gif - 3.4 KTraditional Tobacco Twists, Mishma and Pipes

H132 - Tobacco Twist -Good, heavy large twist of tobacco. This is considered traditional and would be the gift offered an elder or left as an offering. £ 7/$11

Navajo Pipes - Currently we have this one type of pipe that has an antler bowl and a soapstone stem wapped in leather with feathers and beads. These are each unique with beads and feathers decorating each one. These are functional and so can be used with KinnickKinnick, tobacco, or other herbal smoking mixtures. £17/$25

L-093 - Mishma Ceremonial Pipe Mixture - £4.50/$7 This is one of 117 sacred pipe mixtures used by pipe carriers in the Nipowaken Medicine Lodges. It is a form of KinnickKinnick, a blend of herbs for smoking that contain no tobacco. Mishma is a natural and legal relaxant, made in prayer and ceremony. Use in your prayer pipe to connect with Spirit Guides and to create an experience of deep physical and emotional relaxation. Non-smokers may use Mishma as a charcoal smudge to add an air of Peace to any gathering. Mishma makes a delicious herbal tea as well!

Kinnickkinnick - or kinnickinnick - A Native American smoking mix. We have 2 different mixes available. Our first type contains 28g of mixture. It is a traditional herbal smoking mixture of wild-crafted herbs, used in ceremonial pipes as offerings and for pleasure. It contains Bear Berry, Osha Root, Mullein, Red Willow, and Yerba Santa. This mix costs £6/$9 The second blend we have is a completely different mixture of Bearberry, Red Willow, Red Sumac, Lovage Bark, May also contain spearmint or peppermint. This different blending costs only £5/$7.50
It is traditional when going to an elder to ask of their knowledge to bring an offering of a tobacco twist. It can also be left as an offering in the forest or after hunting.
The ceremonial use of the peace pipe is a simple ritual. The peace pipe serves as a portable altar. It is loaded with tobacco, and only tobacco, or a tobacco variation called kinnikinnick. Kinnikinnick has a pleasant aroma, and served in the old days as a substitute, when tobacco was scarce on the great plains. The pipe ceremony begins with loading tobacco, a natural substance, into a pipe and then acknowledging the four directions, Mother Earth, and Father Sky; it culminates with the final offering to the Great Spirit. The pipe is held firmly by the bowl in the palm of the hand with the stem pointed outward. The last step of the pipe offering is the holding up of the pipe with its stem pointed straight upward, out into the center of the universe.

H131 - Copal Resin Wafer Stick - Measuring around 14.5", this wonderful stick of copal resin makes a great gift for yourself, or for someone special. Burned on charcoal rounds, I also like to use it in ceremonial fires to add a wonderful scent to the smoke - £8/$13.00

Copal is a more mature form of resin. The word copal comes from the Spanish word copalli which means incense, a task for which copal can in fact be employed. Copal is burned for protection, cleansing, purification and to promote spirituality
Many years ago in University, I learned that copal was used as a replacement for sacrificing the human heart in Mayan ritual. Seems a Goddess gave the Mayans the knowledge of this resin and the smoke from it was as sweet as the sacrificed human heart and that is how copal came to be used by the Mayans. I use copal in ritual more than any other resin or herb. The wonderful scent you get from burning it is quite pleasant and lingers long after the resin has burned out on the charcoal. I highly recommend this and have already taken a stick for my own rituals.

If you, like me, have ever struggled to find the perfect card for someone, then these are for you. I even bought myself one of the Copal ones (by now you know how I love copal!). These cards are an ideal way to introduce others to the power of burning herbs without seeming too obvious. Each card contains a packet of herbs along with information about each herb and a sacred blessing drawn with beauty and care. There are the following cards with these inscriptions on the front: Cedar - "Great Cedar Tree standing tall and proud with your roots planted firmly in the ground and branches reaching to the sky, share with me your wisdom. With a humble and open heart I will listen." Sweetgrass - "Ah! The Sweetness of life. This native grass fills the heart with a smile. Sweetgrass... for joy and celebration!" Copal - "Copal is the resin of a tree found in South America and Mexico. It's transparent appearance, it's unique fragrance, is unequalled for healing and purification." Sage - "Sage is a plant of purification and blessing. Breathe deep its pure fragrance and welcome its magical and healing powers to fill you and cleanse you..." All cards are made from 100% recycled paper and have a short message relating to each herb inside. They have a blank space for your message and come with a plain white envelope. This company plants trees to replace wood and pulp they use. Each Card is £ 3/$5

Everyone seems to have written a book on shamanism - the new fad. If anyone has any direct reading experience and can recommend books for this section available through amazon.com or amazon.co.uk, please let us know.
Amazon's new terms of service specify that prices should not be displayed on the site - to that end I have simply provided a link for .co.uk folk and .com folk to get their books from. Remember to use the "back" button on your browser to order more from this, or any of our pages.
black elk speaks - shaman or christian? Black Elk Speaks (comment on website) This was an excellent account of Sioux history from a Native American point of view. I read this book in 2 days it is very interesting and easy to read. I agree with another review who liked the fact that they poked fun at themselves and the soldiers. The visions are very descriptive. Black Elk was involved in most of the well known historical points for the Sioux.

black elk - shaman Black Elk : The Sacred Ways of a Lakota (comment on website) Those who know Wallace Black Elk personally know that Bill Lyons captures the flavor of Grandfather's humor, the deeper teachings that lay behind the words, as well as the pain and difficulties that have gone into making access to the Spirit available to all. When you read this book, you'll know why the early government and Christian religions wanted to stop the Indian practices - they're real, and you'll be glad for the triumph of these sacred teachings. Like his predecessor, Nicholas Black Elk, Wallace Black Elk's vision goes beyond the borders of race to encompass all beings, so that once again, the great hoop may be whole. For Indian peoples who have lost contact with spiritual origins, whatever they may be, this book can be a powerful reclamation of the Spirit.

urban shaman Urban Shaman (comment on website) Years ago I was inspired by Bach's Jonathon & Illusions...so much so, that at times I referred to Illusions as my "bible" in the sense that I gave me great inspiration spiritually. After I read the Urban Shaman last year, I returned to the store and purchased every copy they had to give to friends! What impressed me most was that my skeptic, highly educated and scientific self did not balk at any of his teachings...a first for any book/belief. I have always been a warrior and a survivor and now I aim for something better...harmony and unity. This book will be my "bible" for some time to come and I hope to study Huna in Hawaii someday! What an inspiration!

9to5 shaman Shaman in a 9 to 5 World (comment from website) Patricia Telesco's Urban Pagan took the first steps toward unifying a philosophical ideal with the conditions of modern life. Now she presents a neopagan's complete guide to maintaining a powerful connection with nature, even when sacred groves and wild rivers are far away. Offering meditations, rituals, and guided visualizations, she suggests how the noise and hectic pace of the city can be countered with simple gestures, such as lighting a candle at dawn to create moments of peace, thanks, and renewal. Both an introduction and a valuable refresher, Shaman in a 9 to 5 World adapts a vast array of ancient shamanic traditions to city life, including fasting, drumming, praying, creating sacred spaces, interpreting omens and signs, and even shapeshifting and divination. Covering everything from tools and supplies to power animals, totems, amulets, fetishes, and the elements, this book provides step-by-step guidance for healers of the human tribe.

This book contains a segment of the author's life history and her experiences on her life path. It also contains a brief description of how to set up a medicine wheel of your own. Quite a bit involves her battle with her own illness. She also deals with her problems relating to full-blooded Native Americans, since she is of mixed blood

The Shaman : Patterns of Religious Healing Among the Ojibway Indians (Civilization of the American Indian, Vol 165) (comment on website) The author wisely places the practices of shamanism within the cultural context. At no point does the author make the mistake of reducing the shamanic practices to deities and such but correctly emphasizes the "forces" and movements of nature of which the shaman is an "expression." Excellent read for anyone generally interested in shamanism or specifically in the Ojibwe practices of the Mide society.
